Tom Swift and His Electric Locomotive Or Two Miles a Minute on the Rails Victor II Appleton 9781248345832 Books

The previous book, “Tom Swift Among the Fire Fighters” was kind of a dud. Partly because his invention couldn’t conceivably work in reality and partly because like just about every other Tom Swift book it contained almost no unique or interesting ideas. In “Tom Swift and His Electric Locomotive” the invention is actually quite interesting. One of the things I find most fascinating about the Tom Swift series is discovering where technology was at the time. I would never have thought that anyone would even contemplate building an electric locomotive that can travel 2 miles per minute (120 mph) in 1922 but that is Tom’s goal.

The Tom Swift books are nothing if not entirely predictable. In the story, someone breaks into the Swift compound and tries to plant a bomb to blow up Tom’s train. Tom is surprised that someone is able to breach his security, but why? His security is ALWAYS breached. The Swift compound has the most porous security in the history of mankind. In every single book there is a rival group who will stop at nothing to sabotage Tom Swift’s efforts whether they be in creating an invention or searching for treasure. I am over halfway through the series and it’s just so repetitive as if Tom Swift and the rest were caught in an endless loop in Hell. Maybe readers from the 1920’s were more tolerant for repeated storylines or maybe I’m the first person on Earth to try and read through all the Tom Swift books.

When I first started this journey in reading all the original Tom Swift books I was really enjoying them but it has since become a long hard slog, like wading through knee deep mud. I keep hoping something new and exciting happens but I’ve resigned myself to the reality that the series isn’t going to get any better. It’s never terrible but it’s interminably mediocre.

There were apparently two generations of Tom Swift novels; I was into the ones written in the 1960's. They were very good for me at the time, but they were also tight formula fiction. I can't really read these now, they are too predictable. I did love them when I was a kid.
Good delivery. Book in very good condition for a 1922 book thanks. Would do again.
I read it as a kid and it's still good reading. Recommend it for the younger set. Good opportunity to use your imagination.
perfect great book
More of our collection of youth/teen books for reading to or by our Grand Children, or for reading by our youngest to the children she's babysitting. Much better than the mindless video games, or the subliminal and hypnotic garbage on t.v. Highly recommended for teens in your house!
I never read these when I was a boy some 70 yr ago... These are books for YA back then.. The language is old, even for me, being written even before my time... But the concept is interesting and we still don't have trains going that fast.. an easy read, of course... But probably not for today's YA...
