'China' Clarke marries a hooker, takes her to the wilds of Montana to raise his children and treats her like a queen. This man has ways of making money, building an empire and living off the land that settled the wilds. His skill with a gun is nothing short of incredible, and he raises his boys to know how to drive a cattle ranch. Does he die? Does he live? The answer is in the book. As are, thrilling, heart attack causing sex scenes, desperate gun slinging murder and mayhem, and stellar descriptions of the Montana gold rush. What I want to know is who drowned in the Missouri River.

This is only the second book I have not finished. I made it to page 147 and called it quits.I don't enjoy books that have a great deal of dialog. I found myself going back trying to follow what was happening. It was difficult to follow and confusing.

At one point in the book the building of a golf course is being discussed. The tee box was referred to as the "tea box"

I can't recommend this book.

Ditch The story of 'China' Clarke Bill Clarke 9781478224730 Books Reviews

I would have to agree with the review by Dawn L.
I also found it very hard to read and confusing.
Was not at all what I was expecting from this book.
I got the impression it was about China Clarke and his travel to Montana.
He built a mansion near where I lived as a child so i was interested to find out more about him.
Not the book with that information at all.
Very disappointed.
A great tale, full of sex and violence, it's funny and it moves right along. A ditch is bourbon and water out of a ditch in 1860, gold miners were usually drinking and working hard at finding enough gold for another bottle of bourbon. Enjoy the ride.
Ditch The Story of "China" Clarke is simply the most dumbfounding book ever written. Set in the 1870s it is liberally laced with late 20th century sexual morals, slang, and creations such as Long Island Iced Tea. The story revolves not around old "China" Clarke but his son, Bill. Bill is a remarkable guy while trying to figure out how to lash logs together in order to fashion a couple of river rafts, he decides go go ahead and build a fleet of steamboats. At the ripe old age of 19, with absolutely no engineering/shipbuilding experience, his nautical creations are the envy of the Mississippi River...At the fresh young age of 68 his great-grandson, the author Bill Clarke, is about to become the rage of the history re-examined world.
